Ian’s notable clients include Deerhoof, The Dodos, Hauschka, Caleb Nichols, There’s Talk, Strand Of Oaks, John Vanderslice, Matt Nathanson, Whiskerman, and King Dream.  

Ian was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to immigrant parents from Hong Kong and Italy, and moved to the Bay Area in ‘84.  He was introduced to recording as a teenager while learning to play guitar with Jay (who was learning to play drums). The brothers had a 4-track reel-to-reel and a 2-track beta-version of Sound Forge they used to record themselves and make experimental tracks disproportionately influenced by the Dry Lungs V noise compilation . They played in a band called Dilute, which didn’t last long, but somehow made it to an “Essential Post-Rock” list 15 years after the fact. During the course of that band, he found that he loved the recording process, and still does! He started interning at Music Annex in 1996 and has since spent most of his time at Tiny Telephone, and now Brothers (Chinese) Recording. He spent several years in the late ’00s touring as FOH sound for Deerhoof, Dirty Projectors, and Beach House.

He recently played bass for the bands Fan (the solo project of Meric Long of The Dodos) and Eternal Drag (solo project of Logan Kroeber of The Dodos). 

When Ian isn’t recording, his hobbies are recording, meditative vegetable chopping, or just loosely “existing”. He’s VERY left and wants a better life for everyone.
