Jay’s notable clients include: Deerhoof, Spektral Quartet, Geographer, Om, the Dodos, the Brothers Comatose, Bad Bad Hats, Gravy Train!!!!, Sleater-Kinney, and the Magnetic Fields.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Manitoba and California, Jay has been recording and mixing for over 25 years. Jay and his brother Ian became interested in recording in high school when their father’s friend let them borrow an old Teac 40-4 four-track.  After getting hooked on the recording process, his first internship was at Coast Recorders in 1995.  He interned at the Music Annex later that year, where he and Ian were introduced to studio construction and wiring while assisting with changing two consoles in two of the control rooms.  When not doing grunt work, they utilized the studio doing many graveyard shift sessions recording their old band or recording absurd songs. 

Jay and Ian moved on to become house engineers at Tiny Telephone where they worked for 12 years before moving on to become co-owners of Brothers (Chinese) Recording.  During that time he’s had the fortune of working with artists in other studios around the U.S. and the world. 

Jay has played in the bands Dilute, 31Knots, Natural Dreamers (with John Dieterich
and Chris Cohen of Deerhoof). He has toured with The Mall, Miles Kurosky, and Crime In Choir.

When Jay isn’t mixing or recording, he spends his time cooking Sichuan food, sleeping, and/or walking around taking photos of random things.
